Parkinson's disease linked to hepatitis

Prevenar 13 protects older people

The European Commission recently approved the pneumococcal vaccine Prevenar 13 (13-valent polysaccharide conjugate vaccine; PCV13) to prevent pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae in patients aged 18 years and older.

Smoking boosts pain intensity

Smoking may increase the intensity of chronic pain experienced by older people, in light of a postal questionnaire completed by 1,141 people aged between 65 and 103 years in Sweden. Of these, 38.5 per cent reported chronic pain and 9 per cent smoked.

Sarcopenia in the elderly

Up to one-in-12 older people in the UK may suffer from sarcopenia (age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and function).Researchers applied definitions developed by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People to 103 men (mean age 73) living in the community in Hertfordshire.
